Joseph Alexiou, NY writer and guide has written a new book “Gowanus: Brooklyn’s Curious Canal”, which explores how the once tidal estuary of Gowanus creek served as a vital waterway for transport, from the earliest Dutch Settlers through the industrial age.

The book highlights the historical changes to the Canal and the neighborhood that it surrounds over the past 150 years, focusing on how long forgotten nineteenth-century movers and shakers who shaped the foundations of modern-day Brooklyn, turned the Gowanus Canal an industrial dumping ground.
