Last weekend, a female humpback whale was found dead, floating in Long Island Sound. [CT Post] Experts believe the massive mammal is likely one of the whales that have been sighted in the Sound in recent months, by Connecticut boaters.

The dead whale was found 150 yards off Lloyd Harbor, NY across the Sound from Darien, CT.

“There is no definite cause of death, but the blunt force trauma could be consistent with a ship strike or large vessel,” said Rachel Bosworth, spokeswoman for the nonprofit Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.
