Last week, a video surfaced about a fisherman reeling in a 3-eyed catfish from the murky waters of the very polluted Gowanus Canal.

Gothamist first posted the ghoulish story, and the Simpsons-esque fishy spread through the internet like wildfire.

Well, the scientist/biologist/mutant-fishology people have come forth to say, Gowanus catfish? Um… not so much.

In response to the “find”, The New York Times wrote: A fisheries biologist who examined the video declared the fish a freshwater bullhead catfish — and a hoax.

“Everything is wrong here,” John Waldman, a biology professor at Queens College wrote in an email on Monday. “You’d never find a freshwater bullhead in the saltwater Gowanus Canal.”

The NYState Department of Environmental Conservation could not make a determination on authenticity without seeing and inspecting said mutant-fish, but said the extra eye was probably a scar. They also said the fish looks like bullhead catfish that can be found in Prospect Park Lake.

I love these stories, they always make me smile.
