Years ago, I went to school on the Isle of Wight there I spent many a day watching ships of all shapes and sizes sail by my classroom window.

This week, I hear news of a containership aground off Cowes, Isle of Wight near where the famous Round-the-Island sail race takes place during Cowes Week every year.

Island Echo: The container ship APL Vanda has run aground in the Solent off Cowes tonight (Saturday). Part of the 368m ship’s rudder is out of the water, however there are not thought to have been any injuries at this time.

UPDATE SUNDAY – The APL Vanda has been moved into deep water thanks to the efforts of 8 tugs. Having been towed into deep water, the APL Vanda is now making its way up Southampton Water with the assistance of several tugs. It is thought the grounding may have been intentional following a loss of power. Read more from Island Echo here…
