Around 5:20 am yesterday morning, the tugboat Specialist crashed into a moored barge under the Tappan Zee Bridge and sank within minutes.

Paul Amon, of Bayville, NJ was pulled from the chilly water by emergency first responders, but tragically was pronounced dead. Two crewmen remain missing at this writing.

Coast Guard coordinated a joint search-and-rescue effort with units from Rockland, Westchester, NYPD, NYS PD and the Tarrytown FD assisting. USCG suspended the search for the missing men at sunset. Divers are expected to resume the search today.

We are deeply saddened by this tragic and fatal accident, once again reminded of the dangers faced every day, by the men and women who keep our working harbor running.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends, and to the rescue crews involved.
