The Leonard DiCaprio Foundation announced this week their donation of $1M to an ambitious “debt for oceans conservation swap” deal to benefit ocean protection efforts in the Seychelles.

The Seychelles, famous for their coral reefs teeming with marine life, has committed to protecting over 150,000 square miles of ocean in exchange for debt-relief and restructuring for $21.4M owed to international creditors.

MashableThe deal, which was made with the help of the Seychelles government, would increase protection for the country’s waters while supporting the creation of the second-largest marine protected area in the West Indian Ocean, according to a press release.

“We champion projects like this one across the globe that use cutting edge methods in conservation and environmental protection,” DiCaprio said in a press release. “This deal will enhance food security for the local people of Seychelles, help mitigate the effects of climate change on their low-lying island home, and protect the surrounding rich ocean ecosystems for future generations. Read more from Mashable here…
