NTSB will resume the search for the El Faro’s black box today. El Faro was lost last October in Hurricane Joaquin near the near the Bahamas on its way to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The sunken wreckage of the ship was located after an extensive search operation, the bridge found lying on the sea floor a half-mile from her hull. The black box or voyage data recorder (VDR) was not found with the ship.

This new search is being conducted in cooperation with the National Science Foundation and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Research vessel Atlantis will use the autonomous underwater vehicle, AUV Sentry to search the site.

NTSB and U.S. Coast Guard investigators hope the VDR will contain voice and navigational data that will help better determine what happened to the ship in her final hours. Read more from the NTSB here
