Last Friday afternoon, a fire broke out on board the Dann Towing tugboat Thomas Dann while transporting a barge near St. Augustine, Florida. Thomas Dann would have been a fairly familiar sight to local shipspotters, having worked our waters up until a few years ago.
The quick-thinking crew decoupled the burning vessel from the barge before the flames forced them to abandon ship.
Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville received their distress call and sprang into action. A 45-foot Response Boat Medium and a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter were launched. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue boat were also called to the scene.
All six crew were soon rescued. There were no reported injuries. Read the USCG News Release here.
