Further investigation of the grounded Transocean Winner rig in the Outer Hebrides by The Maritime and Coastguard Agency, has revealed that 2 of its fuel tanks have been “breached” and are spilling an undetermined amount of diesel fuel into sea.

The Maritime ExecutiveThe government official in charge of the response effort, Hugh Shaw, said that no signs of the fuel oil had been detected near the site of the grounding, and that it may have already dispersed into the sea. Responders continue to monitor the area for signs of pollution. 

Foul weather is forecast for the remainder of the week, which could delay the salvage assessment. Tug Union Bear and the ETV Herakles are stationed nearby to assist as needed. Read more from The Maritime Executive here…
