America’s first offshore wind farm is nearing completion off Block Island. For the past few weeks, construction crews have been in the process of installing the turbines, 4 of the 5 structures have already been erected.

Ahead of schedule and on budget, operations are expected to begin in early November. When fully operational, the 5-turbine wind farm reportedly will produce enough energy to power 17,000 homes.

Deepwater Wind has also proposed a second wind farm off the coast of Long Island, that would produce 90 megawatts of wind energy. With 15 turbines proposed, the project would become the nation’s largest offshore wind energy farm, 3 times the size of the Block Island project.
