The Bayonne Bridge – sister to the more famous Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia, has been undergoing an ambitious project to raise the roadway from 151 feet to 215 feet so that post Panamax container mega-ships will be able to navigate through to Port Newark.
Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported the Port Authority announced that the project will be delayed until last 2017, more than a year later than expected. The PA’s announcement caught shippers by surprise.
The Wall Street Journal: “Frankly, this came out of the blue. We were expecting this to happen by the end of next year,” said Marc Bourdon, president for North America for French shipping line CMA CGM SA.
“Clearly it impacts the type of vessel size that can be deployed, and we need to re-look at how this is going to affect our plans for 2016.”
